In Karataş, a small Turkish village in the Mediterranean province of Antalya, local merchants collect thousands of handmade rugs from all over Anatolia each year to expose them to the sun, as part of a process of discoloration and disinfection before being exported. After harvesting the wheat crop, each carpet is exposed to the fields for 15 days in the sun on each side, disinfected and repaired. In midsummer there can be 15,000 rugs at the same time occupying the equivalent to 15 soccer fields.
