Thousands of baby turtles return to sea in the beaches of Turkey

Thousands of baby loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), a species of sea turtle that lives in Mediterranean waters, have begun to hatch on the beaches of Mersin, southern Turkey, after their mothers laid their eggs in May. Some 150,000 baby turtles are expected to hatch this year on the beaches of Mersin, which is home to 25% of the nests of this species in Turkey. However, only 1 in 1,000 of these babies will survive and reach adulthood.
