Syria’s transitional government announced in recent hours the appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa, the de facto leader of the country after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad last December, as the country’s new interim president with the task of representing the Syrian government ‘in international forums’.
Several international agencies confirmed the appointment, made during a meeting of military commanders who participated in the rebel offensive led by the HTS Islamist group that led to the fall of the Syrian regime, and which was attended by Al-Sharaa himself as well as the country’s foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani.
The meeting also announced the disbanding of all armed groups involved in the overthrow of Assad to ‘integrate into state institutions’, as well as the ‘disbanding of the defunct regime’s army’ and security agencies controlled by the dictatorship, in order to proceed with a ‘reconstruction of the Syrian army’.
During a speech at the event, which also ratified the dissolution of the Baath party that ruled Syria with an iron fist for decades, Al-Sharaa set his government’s priorities as ‘filling the power vacuum, preserving civil peace, rebuilding state institutions and working to create a development-oriented economy’. ‘The mission of the victorious is hard, and their responsibility immense,’ stressed the new Syrian president, who weeks ago acknowledged that it could take up to three years to draft a new constitution for the country and four years until democratic elections are held.
