Rescue teams have concluded the search for survivors after the earthquake in İzmir, Turkey, where the official death toll now stands at 114 dead and 1,035 injured, and 107 people have been rescued from the rubble.
Mehmet Güllüoğlu, president of Turkey’s Emergency and Disaster Management Agency (AFAD), confirmed via Twitter that search teams had completed rescue tasks 5 days after the 6.6-degree earthquake that toppled 17 buildings in the third most populous city in Turkey, with 4.3 million inhabitants.
Of the more than 1,000 people who were injured by the earthquake, 137 people continue to be admitted to hospital for their injuries. Since the main earthquake on Friday, the region has been rocked by 1,713 aftershocks, 45 of them with an intensity greater than 4 degrees on the Richter scale.
On the other hand, the Turkish parliament yesterday adopted a resolution establishing a parliamentary commission to analyse the measures to be taken against earthquakes in Turkey, one of the most seismic countries in the world and that only 21 years ago suffered a great disaster in the Great Marmara Earthquake of 1999. The commission, which will work for 3 months, was proposed by the five parties with representation in the chamber.
