A training plane crashed on Thursday in an open field in the Büyükçekmece district, on the European side of Istanbul, causing serious injuries to its pilot, who had to be rescued by emergency services. Apparently the pilot, a student from a local flight school, reported that he had engine problems within 10 minutes of takeoff and attempted an emergency landing, but began to plummet and manoeuvred at the last minute to avoid impact against a highway.
