Istanbul welcomed more than 13 million tourists between January and September

Istanbul welcomed 13.1 million foreign tourists between January and September this year, according to data released this week by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, representing an increase of 11.61% compared to the figures for the first nine months of last year. Thus, almost 1 out of 3 tourists who have travelled to Turkey this year – the country received 39.2 million visitors between January and September – visited Istanbul.

Last September alone, with the summer tourist season coming to a close, Istanbul welcomed 1,631,963 foreign tourists, according to official figures; by country, most of the visitors were from Russia (168,925), followed by Germany (119,681), Iran (111,688), the United States (87,670), the United Kingdom (64,980) and France (46,547). The most visited site by tourists not only in Istanbul, but in Turkey as a whole, remains the Grand Mosque of Hagia Sophia.
