The Office of the Governor of Istanbul has sent a letter to the relevant institutions ordering the installation of a system of high-resolution CCTV cameras operating 24 hours a day at entrances and blind spots in the city’s main cemeteries; a measure aimed at strengthening the protection of graves and preventing incidents such as theft, vandalism and disturbances of public order.
In a letter signed by the Governor of Istanbul, Davut Gül, and sent to various institutions – including the Metropolitan Municipality, the Provincial Police, the Gendarmerie and the Office of the Mufti (the city’s religious leader) – the need to adopt additional measures in Istanbul’s cemeteries to ensure security and allow visits to these sites to take place in a peaceful environment is emphasised, according to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
The document stipulates that high-resolution cameras operating continuously must be installed at entrances, exits and blind spots in cemeteries across all districts of Istanbul. Furthermore, cameras without night vision or those that are out of service must be replaced or repaired within a maximum period of 60 days. It also states that recordings must be retained for 30 days, that lighting must be improved in poorly lit areas, and that security forces must step up patrols in these sacred spaces.
This decision by the local authorities follows an increase in complaints from visitors regarding the rising number of incidents in the city’s cemeteries, which has led to the implementation of new preventive measures to strengthen security in cemeteries and protect graves.
In recent years, several incidents have been reported in cemeteries across Turkey, including acts of vandalism, damage to gravestones and thefts of metal items such as railings or plaques. In cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, there have even been reports of desecration and damage to graves.
