The abundant rains and storms that are especially affecting the north and west of Turkey have caused severe floods in Izmir, the third most populous city in the country, causing serious problems for the movement of people and vehicles, and leaving areas such as the historic Kemeraltı Bazaar under water; floods also occurred in the Karabağlar district, south of Izmir, where many cars were under water, while on Yeşildere Avenue, one of the main arteries of the city, traffic was disrupted as many areas were flooded.
In addition to Izmir, the heavy rains that have fallen in a large part of Turkey have also affected other large cities such as Istanbul, where several accidents have occurred due to the accumulation of water and increased traffic; for example, on the D-100 highway near Maltepe, a multiple collision involving 12 vehicles left 3 injured; in Ümraniye, in the Asian part of the city, a minibus without passengers lost control on an overpass and fell from 5 meters high, leaving two injured, one of them in critical condition. In the Turkish capital, Ankara, rain and wind uprooted trees and roofs and brought down a mosque’s minaret, also leaving unusual viral images such as a sofa flying in the air.
