A powerful explosion at midday on Sunday in the northwestern Turkish province of Sakarya left at least one worker dead and 30 injured, six of them in serious condition, while the causes of the blast, which was visible from several kilometres away and sparked a fire that forced numerous fire brigades to intervene for several hours, are still being investigated.
Turkish media reported that the explosion occurred at a pasta factory in the Hendek district of Sakarya province, some 180 km east of Istanbul; the explosion apparently occurred in a silo area and destroyed the entire roof of the factory, triggering a fire which numerous fire brigades from Hendek and other surrounding towns were called out to extinguish. It was during the extinguishing of the fire that the lifeless body of one of the factory workers was found.
The governor of Sakarya, Yaşar Karadeniz, confirmed that the accident had left one dead and 30 injured (five of whom were released shortly afterwards), including three of the firemen who had come to extinguish the fire in the factory, and that an investigation had been launched into the causes of the explosion, which was recorded by cameras.
‘In the explosion at a factory in Hendek district of our province, 30 people have been injured so far; 6 of our citizens are seriously injured and 2 of them have been intubated. In addition, 3 of our firefighters were slightly injured during the extinguishing work,’ said the statement issued by the governor after the explosion in the factory. ‘During the extinguishing work after the explosion, the lifeless body of one of our citizens was found,’ the governor added.
