Rescuers finally managed early this morning to bring Mark Dickey, an experienced American explorer who had been trapped for several days more than 1,000 metres underground in the Morca cave, Turkey’s third deepest, back to the surface. “It’s amazing to be back on the surface,” said an emotional Dickey, thanking the Turkish government for the quick response and the team of 190 experts who worked on the operation, mainly from Turkey and Hungary, but also from Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy and Poland.
Dickey, 40, who suffered a gastrointestinal haemorrhage on 2 September while exploring a cave system in the southern Turkish province of Mersin, was too weak to climb on his own, so his rescuers had to carry him out on a stretcher over several days, making stops along the way, after managing to reach his location four days ago and providing him with medication and blood. “I was close to the edge, at one point I thought I was going to die,” he said after being rescued.
