Austria calls for an end to EU-Turkey negotiations

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has called for an end to Turkey’s EU accession negotiations, proposing instead a new cooperation mechanism between Ankara and Brussels. “We support further rapprochement between Ankara and Brussels, but we cannot imagine full EU membership for Turkey,” told the conservative politician to the German daily Welt yesterday .

Nehammer, who said he plans to meet Erdoğan “in the near future”, stressed the importance of establishing a new partnership between the EU and Turkey based on trust and mutual cooperation, but ruled out full membership for the Eurasian country. “It is important that we are honest with each other. This means officially ending the (accession) negotiations, which have been stalled for years, and developing a new method of cooperation,” the Austrian chancellor said.
