Tekirdağ, near Istanbul, is at risk of suffering a magnitude 9 earthquake that would release an energy equivalent to 24 atomic bombs.
A Turkish earthquake expert has warned that the major earthquake expected to occur in the coming decades in Istanbul may not have its epicentre here but in neighbouring Tekirdağ province, located in the region of Thracia of northwestern Turkey.
“The destructive power of the Tekirdağ earthquake would be equivalent to a magnitude 9. While the energy released in the earthquake expected in Istanbul would be equivalent to 4.3 atomic bombs (like the one in Hiroshima), it would be 24 atomic bombs for the earthquake that is expected in Tekirdağ “, said yesterday the geophysical engineer Övgün Ahmet Ercan during a conference organised precisely in Ereğlisi, a district of Tekirdağ bordering Istanbul.
According to Ercan, the neighbouring provinces of Edirne and Kırklareli, bordering Tekirdağ and also in the border with Greece and Bulgaria, respectively, are the safest places in the event of an earthquake, while the districts of Ergene, Şarköy and Ereğlisi itself are the areas most dangerous and where buildings are most at risk of collapse after an earthquake.
Turkey is traversed by several active faults and is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. Last October 116 people died and more than 3,000 were injured as a result of an earthquake in İzmir, the third largest city in the country; seismologists have long warned that a “Big One” greater than 7 degrees will affect to Istanbul in the next 30 years.
