After knowing the sentence that considers its transformation into a museum in 1934 illegal, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan signed a decree on Friday for the reopening of Hagia Sophia as a mosque, which will take place in the prayer on Friday, July 24. In a speech to the nation, Erdoğan explained that Hagia Sophia will function like any other mosque: no money will be charged to visit it, and it will be open to people of any religion. Erdoğan asked for respect for a decision that he considered a legal and historical right of the Turkish people, as well as that of those who built Hagia Sophia 1,500 years ago.
