Death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey exceeds 7,000

The death toll from the earthquakes that have devastated the SE of Turkey now exceeds 7,000 and there are already some 40,000 injured, according to the latest count of victims by the Agency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), while some experts are already speaking that the final death toll will exceed 20,000. More than 79,000 emergency personnel are working in the disaster area, while time es running out to find more survivors and aftershocks do not stop (435 so far). Some 435,000 homeless people have been temporarily housed in student dormitories, but the authorities have already begun building container houses to house them. The Turkish government is using all the country’s airports to send aid to the region, and has mobilized all its emergency personnel and some 40,000 police and gendarmes in the area to help with the assistance.
