A bus accident this morning in the province of Konya, in central Turkey, left 15 people injured, at least four of whom are in a serious condition, in a new incident on Turkish roads which highlights the high accident rate of this popular means of transport in the Eurasian country, and coincides with the return operation after the religious holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
The accident occurred at kilometre 14 of the Konya-Antalya highway near the town of Madenli, in the Seydişehir district, according to Turkish media. The vehicle, belonging to the private bus company Metro Turizm, was travelling from Antalya to Konya when the driver lost control on a curve due to the wet road surface, causing it to crash into the median of the motorway and overturn on its side.
After being alerted of the accident, a large number of emergency personnel arrived at the scene. A total of 15 passengers on the bus were injured and were taken by ambulance to the Seydişehir public hospital, and according to the latest information, four of the injured are in a serious condition. Turkish authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and to rule out any possible negligence on the part of the driver.
Bus accidents are common in Turkey, where the number of fatalities in intercity bus accidents has increased by 167% in recent years. According to experts, the main causes include the lack of adequate working and resting times for drivers – often forced to work 10 or more hours and sleep in the vehicle itself – speeding, and low passenger awareness of safety measures such as seatbelts.
