Data from 2025 on e-commerce in Turkey compiled by the Eurasian country’s Ministry of Trade has highlighted a profound transformation in consumer habits and food delivery orders in Turkey, revealing which dishes are the most popular food in the country: and, surprisingly, lahmacun has lost its top spot to typical fast-food dishes such as burgers or pizza.
According to the report “Turkey E-commerce Panorama 2025”, whose data has been published by media in Türkiye, the fast commerce model – based on immediate deliveries by delivery riders on motorbikes – has established itself as one of the fastest-growing sectors within e-commerce.
This model is experiencing strong growth, particularly in the food, supermarket and catering sectors (including restaurants and cafés): in 2025, the total sales volume of fast commerce – including instant and scheduled deliveries – reached 388.7 billion Turkish liras (around 7.35 billion euros), representing a 55.6% increase on the previous year.
The majority of fast retail sales volume was accounted for by the food and supermarket categories; specifically, the food sector led with a 69.5% share, whilst the supermarket category accounted for the remaining 30.5%.
Turks are increasingly ordering fast food
Within this second category, the most frequently ordered products were snacks, such as chocolate, wafers and biscuits, with a total volume of 4.64 billion Turkish liras (87.74 million euros), followed by cleaning and home care products at 3.96 billion (74.9 million euros) and chicken and poultry products at 3.46 billion (65.42 million euros). Also notable were meatballs and processed meats at 3.43 billion liras (64.9 million euros), milk at 3.01 billion (56.9 million euros) and bottled water at 2.88 billion liras (54.46 million euros).
Changes in consumer habits, driven by the fast pace of life, were also reflected in food orders. Within the fast-food sector, the highest expenditure in the food category was surprisingly on hamburgers, at 26.74 billion Turkish liras (505.65 million euros).
This was followed by pizza with 17.03 billion (322 million euros), chicken döner with 12.56 billion (237.5 million euros) and lahmacun with 6.67 billion (126.12 million euros). Orders for grilled meatballs and meat dishes totalled 5.08 billion Turkish liras (96 million euros), whilst çiğ köfte reached 4.18 billion (79 million euros) and toasties and sandwiches 3.9 billion liras (73.75 million euros).
Most of the volume and number of fast-food transactions were concentrated in Turkey’s major cities. Istanbul accounted for 55.4% of the total delivery volume and 57.7% of transactions, whilst Ankara came second with 8.1% of the volume and 7.4% of transactions, and Izmir came third with 7% of the volume and 6.6% of transactions. Bursa, with 3.7%, Antalya, with 3%, and Kocaeli, with 2%, were also among the leading cities in terms of volume and number of food orders.
