Breast cancer has become the most common type of cancer diagnosed in Turkey and worldwide, the Eurasian country’s health ministry said in a statement coinciding with breast cancer awareness month. “In our country and worldwide, the most prevalent and at the same time the most deadly type of cancer is breast cancer, which is characterised by an uncontrolled proliferation of cells within the breast tissue. Detecting breast cancer at its early stages not only allows for more successful treatments, but also improves patients’ quality of life,” the ministry said in the statement.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), breast cancer now accounts for almost 12 per cent of all diagnosed cancer cases worldwide, displacing lung cancer to second place. In Turkey alone, an estimated 18,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year; experts point out that only 10 per cent of cases are due to genetic factors, and that nutrition – particularly the consumption of antioxidants – is key to preventing the disease.
