Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced today the signing of an agreement between Turkey’s BOTAŞ oil corporation and Turkmenistan’s national gas company Türkmengaz to import Turkmen natural gas for the Turkish domestic market and for export to Europe.
‘We have taken a historic step in energy cooperation between Turkey and Turkmenistan,’ Bayraktar stressed in a statement released in the past few hours via social media. ‘We have reached the concrete results of the memorandum of understanding to develop our cooperation in the field of natural gas,’ the minister was quoted by Turkish media as saying, referring to the agreement signed in March 2024 that established the framework for hydrocarbon cooperation between the two nations.
The deal between BOTAŞ and Turkmengaz will allow Turkmenistan’s natural gas to start flowing to Turkey from next March 1, Bayraktar explained. ‘With this agreement, which we have been working on for many years, we will further advance strategic cooperation between the countries, while strengthening the security of natural gas supply for our country and for our region,’ the minister stressed.
Turkey consumes more than 50 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year, a demand that currently depends mainly on imports from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran through pipelines, in addition to imports from other countries via liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Recently, Ankara had already expressed its interest in importing 300 billion cubic metres of gas from Turkmenistan over the next 20 years, both for its own consumption and for export to European countries. In the first phase Turkey plans to receive 2 billion cubic metres of Turkmen natural gas through an exchange agreement with Iran, but in the long term it is expected to be supplied through a gas pipeline across the Caspian Sea that will transport 15 billion cubic metres of gas per year.
