A court in Turkey has sentenced Sinan G. and his wife Pınar G. to a total of 90 years in prison for creating several fake web pages that imitated the appearance of the official website of the Migration Management Agency of the Foreign Ministry. In this way, foreigners residing in Turkey accessed these websites to request an extension of their work or residence permits, entering their personal data.
People working for the defendants would later call users to inform them that their application had been approved, but that they had to pay a fee to make an appointment. When the affected foreigners went to migration offices, they discovered that they had no application registered and that the accounts where they had made the payments did not belong to any public institution. The court has now sentenced both owners of these websites to 90 years in prison for “aggravated fraud“, while another 6 accused of collaboration in the crime have been sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison each.
