3.8 million refugees live in Turkey, a majority of them of Syrian origin, in addition to 1.3 million foreigners with residence permits.
A total of 5.2 million foreigners currently live in Turkey, according to recent data released this month by the Turkish Interior Ministry; of these, 3.8 million are refugees, the majority – 3.5 million people – Syrian citizens under temporary protection status, as well as another 319,000 who are under international protection.
According to these data, another 1.3 million foreign citizens live in Turkey legally with a residence permit. Turkey’s Ministry of the Interior points out that more than a million of all foreigners residing in the country are students, and that only in Istanbul – a metropolis with 16 million inhabitants – there are 1.3 million foreigners living in the city.
A total of 551,829 Syrian immigrants are currently legally registered in Istanbul, while other provinces of Turkey such as Gaziantep or Şanlıurfa host some 466,000 and 384,000 refugees from this country, according to official data. The Interior Ministry has precisely stopped granting new residence permits to foreigners in a total of 8 districts of Istanbul: Küçükçekmece, Başakşehir, Bağcılar, Avcılar, Bahçelievler, Sultangazi, Esenler and Zeytinburnu.
