For the first time in 60 years, the only synagogue in Kilis province, located in Southeastern Turkey on the Syrian border, hosted a ceremony to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, following the restoration of the temple. About 40 Jews residing in Turkey attended the emotional ceremony: some of the attendees, born in Kilis but who emigrated to the Israeli state as children, travelled from Israel and had not returned to their homeland for 55 years, so they could barely contain the emotion. Turkey’s Jewish community, estimated at about 20,000 members, has its roots in Sephardic Jews expelled by Spain in 1492 that took refuge in the Ottoman Empire: today, most live in Istanbul.
