Turkey, migrants dead in Lake Van

1,000 years in prison for captain causing the death of 61 migrants

A Turkish court sentenced yesterday Medeni Akbaş to 1,033 years in prison for being responsible for the death of 61 migrants, when in 2020 the boat in which he was transporting them sank in Lake Van, in the east of the country. Akbaş, one of the ship’s captains and who was seeking his acquittal at trial, swam out of the ship after it sank, and was arrested the next day.
