Protests against Israel continue in Turkey, intensifying in the wake of the bombing of a hospital in Gaza that killed nearly half a thousand Palestinian civilians. In Istanbul, where demonstrations have also taken place outside the US consulate in the city, hundreds of taxi drivers gathered in the Şişli district to form a convoy that drove through the streets towards Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square, as drivers chanted slogans such as “murderer Israel“.
Before the start of the protest, which was called to denounce Israel’s bombing and in which taxi drivers carried Turkish and Palestinian flags, the taxi drivers gathered on Büyükdere Street, where they observed a minute of silence and prayed for the victims of the bombing. Deniz Dündar, chairman of the Istanbul Taxi Drivers’ Association, told reporters that their initial aim was to go to the Israeli consulate, but the convoy was diverted to Taksim to avoid incidents with police. “Palestinian lands are being bombed by Israel, and babies and children are dying because of it. The Istanbul taxi drivers’ union has always stood with the nation and the oppressed. We have come together to make the voices of our dead and wounded brothers and sisters in Palestine heard,” he said.
