Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan will travel to Russia “soon” for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, his AKP party spokesman Ömer Çelik confirmed yesterday, adding that the meeting will take place in the Russian city of Sochi – on the Black Sea coast – and that the Turkish leader’s main objective will be to resume the so-called grain deal to “avoid a global food crisis“. Kremlin spokesman Dimitry Peskov reportedly confirmed the meeting, saying that the meeting is being prepared “intensively”.
Previously, Erdoğan had announced at least twice this year the possibility of a Putin trip to Turkey, with the most recent occasion pointing to the end of August as the most likely date; however, in the wake of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine, Putin has further limited his already rare trips outside Russia; most recently, the Russian leader also did not travel to the BRICS summit in South Africa, as the country falls under the jurisdiction of the ICC.
