Electric car sales continue growing at a very good pace in Turkey, almost at the same pace as the network of charging points is increasing. While the Eurasian country is still a long way behind some of its European neighbours in terms of electric vehicle use, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) shows that between January and July the number of electric cars in Turkey increased by 125%, from 14,552 to 32,777: a figure that is partly explained by the sales success of Turkey’s first electric car, the TOGG.
In the first 7 months of 2023, electric vehicle sales grew by 584% to 17,307 units, although they still represent only 3.4% of the total. In July alone, some 4,000 electric cars were sold in Turkey, compared to just 269 sold in July 2022: that is, an increase of 1300%.
In the same period, the network of electric car charging stations increased by 132%, from 1,719 to 3,989 charging stations, with a total of 8,430 charging sockets, of which more than 2,000 are of fast charging. Istanbul has the highest number of charging sockets in Turkey (2 353), followed by Ankara (900), Antalya (668), Bursa (395) and Muğla (323). The number of companies operating electric car charging stations has also skyrocketed, from initially being just 5, to now totalling 136 across the country.
