Turkey’s national carrier Turkish Airlines announced on Friday that it had signed a deal to buy up to 225 planes from US manufacturer Boeing, a long-awaited contract that was made public just a day after Erdoğan’s meeting with Trump in the US.
In a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST), details of which were reported by Turkish broadcaster NTV, the company confirmed that it had closed a deal to buy at least 75 aircraft, and that it had also concluded negotiations to purchase a further 150 aircraft. The order would include 75 units of B787-9 and B787-10 Dreamliners – 50 of which are firm orders and the other 25 optional – with expected delivery dates between 2029 and 2034.
Turkish Airlines has also completed negotiations for the purchase of a total of 150 units of Boeing 737-8/10 MAX aircraft , 100 of which are firm orders and the other 50 are optional, although the total value of the deal is not yet known.
The Turkish airline had announced last week that it was in negotiations with Boeing for new aircraft adquisition. Once the orders are completed, Turkish Airlines expects its fleet to be entirely composed of new-generation aircraft by 2035, with the aim of increasing the airline’s operational efficiency and achieving an average annual growth rate of 6%.
Turkish Airlines, recently named Europe’s best airline for the tenth consecutive year, has also been in the news recently for its bid to become a shareholder in Spanish airline Air Europa after outbidding European rivals Air France-KLM and Lufthansa, which withdrew from negotiations.
