The famous Blue Mosque, one of the most well-known and most frequented monuments by tourists visiting Istanbul, has practically completed the restoration work that had kept it closed and, as announced by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism itself, it will be reopened to the public coinciding with the prayer on Friday, April 21, just when Ramadan ends. Started in 2019 before the pandemic, it is the largest restoration that the Blue Mosque has undergone in its 4 centuries of history; built in front of Hagia Sophia in 1617 by order of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmet I, it receives its nickname for being decorated with more than 21,000 blue tiles handcrafted in İznik and Kütahya.
