Kayaköy (Livissi in Greek), is a ghost town located on the outskirts of Fethiye, southwestern Turkey, which in the 19th century had about 6,000 Christian (Greek) and Muslim (Turkish) inhabitants until World War I, when with the defeat and fall of the Ottoman Empire and after the Turkish War of Independence, Greece and Turkey agreed to a population exchange in 1923: the Greek inhabitants of Kayaköy moved to live in Thessalonica, from where Muslim Turkish inhabitants were in turn expelled; however, they did not want to settle in Kayaköy, which led to the decline of the town, which was completely abandoned after an earthquake that struck it in 1957. Today it is a ghost town with hundreds of abandoned houses that nevertheless arouses the interest of many tourists , especially during the pandemic due to its wide and open spaces.
