An elderly man living alone lost his life whilst trying to escape a fire that broke out on Monday in a property in the province of Manisa, in western Turkey, and which completely destroyed his home, located on the first floor of a three-storey building in the district of Turgutlu.
The fire broke out at around 9:00 am on Monday in a flat on Dumlupınar Street, in the Altay neighbourhood, in the centre of Turgutlu. The flames spread rapidly and eventually reached the windows of the upper floors. After being alerted by neighbours, emergency services, including firefighters, medical staff and police, were mobilised.
Firefighters who attempted to gain access to the flat via the balcony found the body of Mustafa Gökmen, an 88-year-old man who lived alone in the property. Initial investigations suggest that the victim went out onto the balcony of the flat to try to escape the flames, but collapsed and died whilst attempting to escape, according to the Turkish news agency DHA.
After approximately an hour of intense firefighting, the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire completely. However, the flat where the victim lived was left completely burnt out and uninhabitable, whilst the upper floor of the building, which was also engulfed by the flames, suffered material damage as well.
Following initial inspections by the police and the public prosecutor’s office at the scene of the fire, the body of the deceased man was taken to the morgue at Turgutlu public hospital. The authorities in this province of Turkey have launched an investigation into the incident to establish the cause of the fire and determine what led to this tragedy.
