Two public buses belonging to the Istanbul City Transport Company İETT (İstanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel İşletmeleri) collided head-on this morning in the Beykoz district on the Asian side of the city, injuring seven people, including the driver, in at least the third accident involving a municipal bus in the Turkish metropolis in just a week.
The crash took place on Çayır Street in the Yalıköy district, where, according to TRTHaber, an İETT bus collided head-on with another bus of the same company for unknown reasons. Several teams of police, fire brigade and medical services were immediately deployed to the scene of the accident.
The driver of the first bus and six passengers on the second bus suffered various injuries, receiving medical attention at the scene of the accident, although none of the injured were seriously injured. The road was temporarily closed to traffic as a result of the collision, which caused occasional traffic jams, but after the buses were removed the traffic was restored in a controlled manner. The police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Three bus accidents in Istanbul in just one week
This is at least the third accident in a week involving buses of İETT, Istanbul’s municipal public transport company. Yesterday, in the Sancaktepe district on the outskirts of Istanbul, an İETT bus rear-ended several vehicles stopped at traffic lights, injuring at least five people.
A day earlier, in the European district of Esenler, another bus of the same transport company lost control and ended up crashing into a car park, hitting a car and a motorbike parked on the spot: in this case there were no casualties, although there was significant material damage.
In relation to the accident in Beykoz this morning, security cameras in this area in the north of Istanbul were able to record the moment when the two buses travelling in opposite directions collided head-on.
