Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan handed over on Thursday a TOGG electric vehicle – the first electric car designed and manufactured in Turkey – to Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his official visit to Pakistan, where Erdoğan praised the Islamabad government’s firm stance on Gaza and the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to closer political and economic ties.
Several Turkish media reported that the Turkish leader handed over the TOGG T10X model to Sharif – who after the handover ceremony posed next to the vehicle and took a tour in the car with the Turkish president – during Erdoğan’s visit to Pakistan, the last stop on an Asian tour that has seen the Turkish president previously visit Indonesia and Malaysia.
After receiving a warm welcome in Islamabad, during a joint press appearance Erdoğan said he was delighted to visit the country ‘bound by a brotherhood with Turkey’. ‘The support given to us by the Muslims of Pakistan during the Turkish War of Independence and the battles of Çanakkale (Gallipoli) are the most obvious examples of our exceptional relations,’ the Turkish president said, referring to the support given by Pakistanis to the birth of the Republic of Turkey during the war of independence that the Turks fought against the occupying European powers, following the defeat in World War I of the Ottoman Empire.
Before appearing before reporters, Erdoğan and Sharif attended the 7th Turkey-Pakistan high-level strategic cooperation council, where the two leaders pledged to redouble their efforts to increase bilateral trade fivefold to $5 billion.
Sharp criticism of Trump’s Gaza plan
Erdoğan also had praise for the firm stance shown by Islamabad on the Palestinian issue ‘especially during a time when inhumane and illegal proposals are being made to expel our Gazan brothers from their homeland’, in a clear reference to the plan announced by Trump.
For his part, Sharif stressed that Pakistan – Ankara’s main ally in the region – fully supports Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and stressed of Erdoğan that he is ‘a very important and highly respected leader in the Islamic world’. ‘You have also lead the forefront, denouncing problems and speaking out for the rights of oppressed peoples, whether in Gaza, Palestine or Kashmir,’ Sharif said.
