Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan has refuted the idea that water is an unlimited resource in his country, asserting that Turkey “cannot waste a single drop of water”. “Water is not only a limited resource, but a resource that is diminishing. Moreover, with climate change, drought and industrialisation, the pressure on water resources is increasing day by day, and to this must be added the increase in population,” he warned in a speech in Ankara during the inauguration of a new water reservoir.
Erdoğan insisted that Turkey is not a country rich in water resources, and recalled that annual rainfall in the country – 574 mm on average – is below the world average. “Turkey does not have a single drop of water to waste. Moreover, polluting our water is tantamount to treason. We must use our water efficiently, and manage our resources properly,” the Turkish president stressed, adding that only 1% of the Earth’s water is fresh water and potentially drinkable: “In many parts of the world, including in our country, water is seen as an unlimited resource. I would like to say here that this is a misconception.” “Water is one of the most strategic and valuable resources,” Erdoğan added, calling for awareness-raising among all citizens.
