US Defence Department sources confirmed the attack carried out in the last few hours by Iran against its military bases in the Middle East: specifically against the Al Udeid military base in Qatar, which was attacked with several short and medium-range ballistic missiles, although none of the Iranian missiles managed to hit the installations, according to official sources.
According to breaking news reports published by several international agencies and media, the US confirmation came shortly after Iran confirmed that it had launched the attack, saying that it had been carried out with a number of missiles equivalent to the number of bombs dropped by the United States in its attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The announcement was made from Tehran in a televised message accompanied by martial music, which included the sentence “A powerful and successful response by the Iranian Armed Forces to America’s aggression”, in which the Iranian regime also expressed its desire to de-escalate the conflict.
The US Department of Defence, however, considered the Iranian attack as a “symbolic response to the US attacks over the weekend”, given that before the launch Iran notified both the Qatari and US authorities of the attack, which led Qatar and other countries in the region such as Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates to close their airspace as a precaution.
The Qatari government condemned the attack on Al Udeid, adding that it reserved the right to a military response, but confirmed that all the missiles launched by Iran were intercepted before impacting and that there were no injuries, data that was also confirmed by the Pentagon. Saudi Arabia also condemned the Iranian attack “in the strongest terms”, considering it a “flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighborliness”.
US military sources also denied that there had been any other attacks by Iran on other US bases in the Middle East, as had been reported by numerous media outlets, which had mentioned another possible attack on US bases in Iraq. The same sources acknowledged only that the anti-aircraft defence systems at the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq were activated in the event of a potential attack, but only as a precautionary measure.
