The club declined to disclose the names of the two new players who have tested positive for coronavirus. These contagions reopen the debate on the risks of resuming the football league.
Two football players from Beşiktaş, one of the major clubs in the Turkish league’s first division, have tested positive for coronavirus, the club confirmed on Thursday, although it has not yet revealed the names of the new infected players.
“All the players, technical staff and employees of the club were tested for the virus at the BJK Nevzat Demir training facility on Wednesday, June 24. Two football players tested positive for COVID-19, according to the results,” the club announced in a statement, adding that both players -it did not mention their names- have already started treatment for the disease.
Fenerbahçe, Trabzonspor and Galatasaray have expressed via Twitter their wish that the players recover soon. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has also been interested in the state of health of those affected, while Turkish media speculate about the possible consequences for the game that Beşiktaş -who is in 5th place in the classification- must play this Friday in Istanbul against Konyaspor.
Only 6 days ago Akhisarspor was in the news after 12 team members tested positive for coronavirus, while Beşiktaş itself has previously had several cases of COVID-19. These new contagions reopen the debate on the decision taken in early June by the clubs and the TFF, to resume the Turkish football league to play the 8 games that remained to be played despite the pandemic, although without public.
