A new twist has emerged in recent hours in the wide-ranging drug investigation coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office: Turkish celebrity singer Edis Görgülü was arrested at Istanbul airport on his return from abroad, after a warrant had previously been issued for his arrest as part of an anti-drug operation carried out last week, which culminated in the arrest also of singers Murat Dalkılıç and Kaan Tangöze, Turkish series actor İsmail Hacıoğlu and well-known influencer Kemal Doğulu, among others.
According to Turkish media reports, authorities arrested the artist as part of a wide-ranging investigation into alleged drug-related offences, also including allegations of promoting prostitution, involving a large number of celebrities in Turkey. The investigation is being coordinated by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of a macro case into alleged activities linked to the possession, consumption and sale of narcotic substances.
Edis, who had stated that he was out of the country when the warrant was issued last week, was intercepted by police at Istanbul airport shortly after his return to Türkiye. Prior to his arrest, the singer had posted a message on social media claiming to have cut short a long-planned holiday to return voluntarily to the country to face the charges. The artist, however, denied all the accusations against him and assured that he had no connection with the events under investigation, as well as expressing his willingness to fully cooperate with the authorities.
Turkish press reports that, after being arrested at Istanbul airport on charges of “use of narcotics and stimulant substances”, Edis was taken into police custody and is expected to be transferred to court tomorrow, once the relevant procedures have been completed. The Turkish singer was among the suspects wanted as part of a wide-ranging anti-drug investigation launched in October last year that led to the arrest of well-known artists, influencers and even actors of Turkish series, and which has since been expanded through successive operations, concluding so far with the formal arrest of at least 26 people.
