Veteran Turkish actor Kenan Işık, best known for many years as the host and best-known face of Turkey’s popular TV quiz show ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’, has died on 29 July at the age of 76 after spending the last 10 years in a coma.
According to Turkish media reports, Işık had been in a vegetative state in an intensive care unit since 21 March 2014, when he suffered a fall in a hotel sauna in Istanbul that caused him severe head injuries and a brain haemorrhage; after a 4-hour surgery, doctors were finally unable to do anything to recover the actor, and he was declared brain dead.
Born on 1 October 1947 in Malatya, southeastern Turkey, Işık became a professional actor at the age of 17. While completing his studies at Ankara’s Gazi University, Işık continued progressing in his professional career and became a member of Turkey’s national theatre company in 1972. Throughout his long career as an actor, he not only acted in more than a dozen of productions and Turkish series, but also wrote dozens of plays which he brought to the stage.
Although he received more than 30 awards for his career as an actor, director, screenwriter and voice actor during his lifetime, Kenan Işık was known to the general public mainly as the host for 14 years – from 2000 until his tragic accident – of the famous TV quiz show ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ (in Turkish Kim Milyoner Olmak İster?), which was broadcast in Turkey by Kanal D, Show TV, Star TV and, in recent years, ATV channel.
