Nine of the injured as a result of the terrible fire that broke out at a nightclub in North Macedonia over the weekend, leaving a tragic death toll of 59 and 155 injured, arrived in the last few hours in Turkey on board medicalised planes chartered by the Turkish Ministry of Health, in order to receive treatment in the Eurasian country.
According to Turkish newspapers such as Sabah, the first plane landed late yesterday at Sabiha Gökçen airport in Istanbul, from where the injured were transferred to the burns unit of the Başakşehir Çam and Sakura hospital complex, located in the European district of Başakşehir in the Turkish metropolis.
The fire broke out in the late hours of Saturday during a concert given by the popular hip-hop band DNK at the ‘Pulse’ nightclub in the town of Kocani, some 100 kilometres from the country’s capital, Skopje. At the time the fire broke out, there were some 1,500 people – mostly youngsters between the ages of 14 and 25 – inside the venue. Several people have been arrested in connection with the organisation of the event, while North Macedonia has declared seven days of national mourning starting this Monday.
Following a request for help sent by the Macedonian authorities, Turkey sent two medicalised planes to the Balkan country to evacuate some of the injured; the first of these planes took to Istanbul three people with burns as a result of the fire in the nightclub, while a second plane evacuated another six injured to Bilkent City Hospital in the Turkish capital, Ankara. In a statement, the Turkish Ministry of Health conveyed its condolences to North Macedonia for the tragedy, and reiterated the willingness of the Turkish authorities to provide any medical assistance that may be necessary.
