Turkish government has launched a wide-ranging investigation after the controversy unleashed by the concert recorded by a DJ in the former Byzantine Orthodox monastery of Sümela, in Trabzon, a candidate for World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which has led to protests in Greece, whose foreign ministry on Monday called the images “offensive” and a “desecration” of the monument. The video, which has also received much criticism in Turkey on social media and from entrepreneurs in the tourism sector, was recorded without the permission of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, so it will be investigated whether the governor of Trabzon or the provincial director of tourism were negligent in authorising the event at the monastery, which has recently undergone a restoration.
