Climate change, droughts, and the overexploitation of aquifers have caused Turkey to lose some 2 million hectares of wetlands and lakes in the last 60 years: an area equivalent to 1.5 times the Sea of Marmara, according to environmental associations; in a country where 74% of water resources are used for agriculture, 13% for industry and 13% for human consumption, virtually all of Turkey’s wetlands (105 in total) have experienced a dramatic loss in extent in the last half century, according to a report published by the Nature Association, which recalls that more than a third of threatened or endangered species live in wetlands.
