The mystery surrounding the appearance of several lifeless bodies on the beaches of the province of Antalya, a well-known tourist destination on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, continues. In the last few hours authorities have discovered another body on the beach of a hotel, bringing the total number of bodies found in the last 5 days in the area to 6, with no known cause for the moment, sparking all kinds of speculation and fears.
On this occasion it was hotel staff who notified the police of the appearance of a body at around 10:30 on Sunday morning on a beach in the Aksu district, of which the authorities have limited themselves to inform that it was a male, without giving any further details. The other five bodies were found along a 73-kilometre stretch of coastline, many of them reportedly unrecognisable or even with limbs amputated.
The first two bodies were found on 17 January on the beaches of Alanya and Manavgat, belonging to a child and an adult. According to local media, the Turkish authorities are considering the possibility that the mystery surrounding the appearance of these bodies is related to the sinking of a boat loaded with illegal immigrants, since Turkey is one of the main routes for illegal migration from countries in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.
