Three suspects in Sunday’s assassination of a Palestinian businessman in Istanbul have been captured in Romania following a joint operation between Turkish police and Interpol, reportedly as they were trying to flee to Israel.
Turkish news agencies reported that the arrested men, identified by the initials G.S., T.S. and S.A., fled Turkey only two and a half hours after committing the murder on 18 August in the Istanbul district of Kağıthane, where they shot the victim while he was inside a vehicle, wounding two other people, one of them another Palestinian businessman who is still in hospital in critical condition.
After committing the crime, the perpetrator and two accomplices fled, changing vehicles three times before finally leaving the country less than two hours after committing the murder. Police quickly launched an investigation that followed the suspects’ escape route, determining that they had crossed overland into Bulgaria and then headed to Romania, from where they planned to take a plane to Israel.
The Interpol unit of the Turkish police then requested the cooperation of the Romanian authorities, who responded positively to the request and arrested the three suspects as they were about to board the plane. Turkish media reported that Turkey is currently working with the relevant Romanian authorities to extradite the detainees.
For their part, both the family of the deceased Palestinian businessman and the Turkish authorities have ruled out any political motivation behind the murder, and the main theory of the investigation is that it was a dispute over a debt.
