The Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, won a narrow victory in the presidential elections on Sunday against his rival Mustafa Akıncı, who led the unsuccessful negotiations with the Greek Cypriots. Unlike Akıncı, Tatar (a graduate of the Cambridge University Faculty of Economics) is in favor of maintaining the close ties of North Cyprus with Turkey and is committed to a solution for the island based on two independent States, rather than one federation with the South of Greek majority.
