The authorities of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot Republic have finally decided that the ghost town of Varosha (Maraş, in Turkish), which has been abandoned for 46 years, will be reopened to the public to recover it as a destination for tourism. Varosha was in the 50s and 60s a popular destination for Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor or Richard Burton; but after the division of Cyprus the city was in the “neutral zone” that separates Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, and became a military area forbidden to civilians.
