Iraq, Pope's historic visit

Pope Francis lands in Iraq on historic visit

Pope Francis landed this Friday in Iraq on a historic 3-day visit classified as high risk not only because of the coronavirus pandemic, but also because of the insecurity in the country, which since the US invasion in 2003 it lost 80% of its Christian population due to war, sectarian conflicts and the rise of the Islamic State. 10,000 people are in charge of the Pope’s security on this trip to Iraq, where coronavirus infections have tripled since January and where only 250,000 of the 1.8 million Christians that the country had at the end of the 20th century remain.
