Kadir Topbaş, who was mayor of Istanbul for 13 years (from 2004 to 2017), died on Saturday at the age of 76 in the ICU of a hospital where he had been admitted since November 16 after contracting coronavirus. Born in 1945 in the Artvin province, he worked as an architect in Istanbul and entered politics upon being elected mayor of the Beyoğlu district, where he lived. In 2004 he was elected metropolitan mayor of Istanbul by the AKP party, being re-elected twice in office and becoming the only mayor of the city to be reelected and to win three elections, standing out for his investments in the subway and the public transport network of the city. In September 2017, he announced his resignation by surprise. He leaves a wife and three children.
