At least 5,100 people have died in the eastern Libyan port city of Derna alone, where more than 7,000 people are injured after severe flooding on Sunday following the storm Daniel, which also swept through Greece, caused two dams upstream in the Darnah wadi to burst, triggering a flood that inundated the area, washing away at least half of the city and sweeping hundreds of people into the sea.
“There are bodies everywhere, inside houses, in the streets, in the sea… Everywhere you go you find bodies of men, women and children,” said a member of the rescue teams that have managed to reach the city from Benghazi, despite the destruction of the main communication routes.
Red Crescent officials in Libya say Derna was submerged by floods that reached seven metres high, sweeping away everything in their path and killing entire families who were unable to escape. But the worst is yet to come: the actual death toll is expected to be much higher, since at least 9,000 people are still missing.
