Residents and tourists in Istanbul are struggling with above-normal temperatures of close to 40 degrees Celsius, exacerbated by humidity and hot winds from North Africa, leading those who dare to go outside during the day to seek shelter from the sweltering heat as best they can.
With temperatures expected to peak today at over 35 degrees Celsius, Istanbul is experiencing one of the hottest days of the summer according to media, and experts have urged citizens to avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours, especially children, pregnant women, people with heart conditions and the elderly. Those who dare to go out take hats, umbrellas or even portable fans with them, but even in shaded areas the air feels hot and thick, so Istanbul’s beaches and coastal areas have been crowded with people seeking to cool off in the sea.
“It is extremely hot and humid in Istanbul. We asked for the day off work and came to the sea to cool off,” said a resident of the city. “It’s hard to breathe because of the heat and humidity. It’s impossible to stay indoors, even with the air conditioning it’s not enough,” he added. “The heat has increased unbelievably. We decided to come to the beach to cool down, we can’t stay indoors because of the heat. In the mornings it is very hot and it doesn’t cool down at night either,” said another Istanbul resident.
In an attempt to cope with these unbearable temperatures for many, free water and lemonade distribution points have been set up in central Istanbul districts such as Beşiktaş to combat the heat wave; located in strategic locations in Beşiktaş, including Ortaköy, Barbaros, Köyiçi and Levent squares, these hydration and refreshment zones are open daily from 11:00 to 15:00 and will remain operational until at least 11 July.
