A monumental kinetic sculpture created by the Turkish artist Hayri Karay, standing almost 38 metres tall, was unveiled this week at Istanbul Airport following a ceremony attended by numerous dignitaries and artists.
The work, a kinetic sculpture – capable of moving by its own – standing 37.7 metres tall and comprising two moving parts, was the winner of the second edition of the competition IGA ART Art Projects Competition, one of the most important artistic initiatives in Turkey. The piece was unveiled at a ceremony attended by a large audience as well as IGA executives – including its CEO Selahattin Bilgen – and representatives from the art and culture world, according to the Haber Türk channel.
The project, selected from 172 proposals submitted in 2023, was conceived as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic. The giant structure, on display in the very centre of Istanbul Airport, seeks to reflect the richness and ethnic and cultural diversity of Anatolia through movement and transformation.
“This sculpture is a structure that differs depending on the relationship it establishes with the viewer. Rather than having a fixed meaning, it defines a constantly changing process that is open to multiple interpretations and is reconstructed together with the viewer. Each person will see something different from various perspectives,” explained the creator of the giant sculpture on display at Istanbul Airport. Karay also explained that he deliberately chose not to give a name to his work, which has been informally dubbed “nameless”: “Giving it a name would have imposed a definition on it. It must remain open-ended. Everyone will take something from it based on their own experience,” he said.
