Israel has reportedly accepted an agreement with Hamas for a ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners and hostages. According to reports by the Israeli public broadcasting corporation KAN, the agreement between the two sides would include a four-day cessation of hostilities and the release of 50 hostages held by Hamas (which is estimated to be holding some 239), in exchange for the release of some 150 Palestinian prisoners, mainly women and children.
“The Israeli army plans to use the truce to reorganise its forces as it prepares to expand its ground operation into southern Gaza,” KAN reported. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly confirmed the ceasefire agreement, noting that the hostages will be released in phases; however, Netanyahu assured that after the four-day truce Israel will continue its operations in the Gaza Strip. Hours earlier, the leader of Hamas’s political wing, Ismail Haniyeh, had claimed that an agreement on a truce with Israel was “close”. The announcement has already sparked opposition voices within the Israeli government, where the far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called a possible truce “a very, very, very big mistake”.
