Devlet Bahçeli, leader of Turkey’s nationalist National Movement Party (MHP) and Erdoğan’s ally, rejected the change in the electoral system for presidential elections suggested by the current Turkish president, who yesterday proposed changing Turkey’s electoral system for electing the President of the Republic so that the candidate with the most votes could be elected directly, without the need for a second round.
“The backbone of the presidential executive system is the 50%+1 rule,” Bahçeli said in a speech in Ankara to his party’s deputies, referring to the need for the presidential candidate to get more than 50% of the votes in the election to be elected. “We are talking about electing the President of the Republic. We are not electing a mayor, a deputy or a mukhtar (village or neighbourhood head). We are electing a president who will represent the whole nation,” insisted Bahçeli, who believes that the current system favours democratic plurality and political stability. “However, we are ready to seek a reasonable solution that does not damage the essence of the new system”, stressed the nationalist leader, who nevertheless insisted on his good relations with Erdoğan.
